I had to call on the Lord’s name after watching the trailer for Mo’Nique’s new movie “Blackbird,” because it looks soon good! It’s amazing to see a woman who has cracked us up for years, broaden her brand by branching out into the acting world…and making some amazing choices while doing that! This Oscar award winner is not just starring in this film, but she executive-produced it as well.
Mo’Nique says:
I am truly proud to bring this amazing film to the big screen. “BLACKBIRD is about a young man in Mississippi coming to terms with his sexuality. It’s an incredibly inspiring story that beautifully tells the journey of life, love, family and finding one’s truth through a myriad of personal triumphs, strength and acceptance. After first reading the script, I knew this was a story that we had to tell. It’s a story that will resonate profoundly in the hearts of many, and a story that I knew, if told correctly would create a movement and bring about change to the lives of so many people, especially within the African American and LGBT communities.
It takes tension off of my shoulders to know that successful people in the industry are taking on the task of bringing light to some of the tough situations that human beings are experiencing in the urban community (when it comes to homosexual relationships). I am praying that these films and successful television shows like “Empire” and “How To Get Away With Murder” are helping close-minded people be more understanding of gay and lesbian love. Sidenote: April 24th is the day after my birthday, so I know what I’ll be doing that weekend…along with a big box of popcorn! LOL
