(HOUSTON) — Hydration is key in the Houston heat, and some kids got to learn that lesson first-hand Wednesday from Houston Texans star J.J. Watt.

The field was not the one at NRG Stadium, but the one behind the Houston YMCA on Griggs Road. And the cheers may not have been as loud, but they were just as sincere.

The assembled kids showed Number 99 their stuff as he put them through a number of football drills during the YMCA Beat the Heat program.

Watt then talked to them about the importance of staying hydrated when playing or exercising outdoors in the summer heat.

He also talked to them about doing the right thing in a pep talk about following their dreams, believing in themselves and, of course, obeying their parents.

“When the kids understand that the people around them are looking out for their best interest, I mean, obviously we all know what it was like to be a kid. You have teachers, you have parents, you have everybody trying to give you a message, and sometimes you don’t want to do your chores; sometimes you don’t want to do your homework; but down the road, the more you do the right thing, the more successful you’re going to be,” Watt said.

Watt didn’t just attract kids and media with his appearance, YMCA member Susan Bynam came out when she heard the star defensive end was going to be there.

“I’m a big fan — a big Houston Texans fan, a big J.J. Watt fan — so I decided to come out here and try and support the program,” Bynam said.
