On the same day Bill Cosby was being deposed in a sexual battery case, Dateline aired a special with 29 of over 50 women that have accused the comedian of sexual assault. The women’s stories date back over 50 years with one of the first incidents said to have taken place in 1965.
Many of the women were in their teens and early twenties at the time and assumed they were each an isolated incident that no one would believe. The women now feel that by coming together to share their stories, they are empowering other victims of assault to know that they are not alone.
I think for me, if I feel like I can be of service to another generation — by standing up and showing how important it is for everyone to stand up and tell the truth, and that it’s ok, and look what we’ve created here,” said Cindra Ladd.
“I believe it’s healing and it’s cathartic to be able to talk to each other,” said Sunni Welles. “To look around and be together.
The child stars of The Cosby Show maintain their stance that their TV dad and the man accused of these heinous crimes are two totally different people. Most recently, Malcolm Jamal-Warner spoke with the Associated Press about the situation the historical relevance of the beloved series.
“My biggest concern is when it comes to images of people of color on television and film, no matter what … negative stereotypes of people of color, we’ve always had ‘The Cosby Show’ to hold up against that. And the fact that we no longer have that, that’s the thing that saddens me the most because in a few generations the Huxtables will have been just a fairy tale,” he said.
“The legacy can’t help but be tarnished…The Cosby Show was part of the fiber of American culture so to see that, to see that the show doesn’t necessarily have the same sheen that it once did, is definitely a downer.”
