Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 37 KOs) is gearing up for his fight on May 2 with Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Pacman has been one of, if not the, most feared fighters on the planet. The Filipino has always had an interesting mix of speed, power and an unconquerable heart.
This is the fight that all boxing fans have been asking for many years. As the big fight nears, relive Pacquiao’s top five fights.
5. Manny Pacquiao vs. Marco Antonio Barrera
On November 11, 2003, Pacquiao took part in his first major fight in the U.S. The then 26-year-old Filipino was taking on Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera.
Barrera gave Pacquiao a major scare early in the fight. The Mexican knocked down “Pacman” in the first round, but he came roaring back. The Filipino continued his onslaught, and after two knockdowns, Barrera’s corner had the fight stopped in the 11th round.
This fight put Pacquiao on the map.
4. Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez
On May 8th, 2004, Pacquiao had to face another bad man of the boxing world, Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico. It was his first fight since defeating Barrera. The brutal fight between the two fighters ended in a split decision draw. This fight sparked one of the greatest boxing rivalries in boxing history, and the two battled a total of four times. They drew one, Manny Pacquiao won two fights. But Juan Manuel Marquez knocked Pacman out in their fourth fight.
3. Manny Pacquiao vs. Oscar De La Hoya
On December 6, 2008, Pacquiao had to take on one of the biggest names, and one of the best boxers, of the last 20 years. His opponent, “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya. The Olympic Gold Medal winner, at least on paper, was going to give Pacman all he could handle. De La Hoya is bigger fighter with a longer reach.
That all went out the window when the fight started. The Filipino wrecking ball beat the stuffing out of “The Golden Boy.” It was so bad that De La Hoya did not come out for the 9th round―he never fought again.
The win turned Pacquiao into a household name in the sport, and his star has been shining bright ever since.
2. Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto
Pacman has made a career of not backing down from a challenge.
On November 14, 2009, Pacquiao took on one of the best challengers he has ever faced. The Filipino southpaw had to take on Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. The challenger had lost only once in a very controversial fight to Antonio Margarito.
The Puerto Rican knockout machine was no match for Pacquiao. Pacman put a hurting on Cotto and the referee finally stopped the fight in the 12th round.
1. Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley
Pacquiao had lost two of his last three fights, one of which was a horrific knockout. The world proclaimed that the world-beating Pacquiao was no more― he lost his magic.
Bradley had surprisingly defeated Manny in a split decision on June 9th, 2012. Pacman and Bradley went the distance, but the Filipino got the win. The significance of the win was bigger than the “W,” it proved that Pacquiao was back. Pacman wanted revenge, and on April 12, 2014, he got it.
