James Brown was a musical genius and as with most geniuses they usually have a streak of unusual, maniacal behavior. Actor, Chadwick Boseman, in the the movie, “Get On Up,” show cases Soul Brother #1’s perfections and imperfections perfectly.
The movie itself plays a fine balance of past traumatic childhood memories and present flashbacks that gives you insight as to why he turned out to be, “the hardest-working man in show business.”
Boseman dances up a perfect storm, gives you a peek of Brown’s ego, paranoia and of the tyrannical Boss to his musicians he could be. He even occasionally turns to address the camera and talks directly to audience, which I personally love when movies do that.
The women come and go in the movie but the strained friendship between Brown and Bobby Byrd, played by Nelsan Ellis, is high-lighted throughout the movie. You will enjoy this flick.
