On Friday night, R&B songstress Keyshia Cole brought her highly anticipated The Way It Is 20 Year Anniversary Tour to H-Town. The show, held at the Toyota Center downtown, featured R&B newcomers Tink and Elijah Blake, along with Keri Hilson, as openers. Now, you know I was on BP time, so I missed all the openers—but I made it just in time for Keyshia’s set!

She hit the stage opening with “Guess What” from her debut album and took us on a ride through every single track. The crowd was in their feelings—belting out every word to her emotion-packed bangers like “Superstar,” “I Should’ve Cheated,” and “(I Just Want It) To Be Over,” just to name a few. Halfway through the show, Keyshia asked the crowd if they minded a quick outfit change, promising to come back and finish strong.

That’s when the surprise of the night hit—Trey Songz popped out and lit up the stage with hits like “Bottoms Up” and “NaNa,” sending the crowd into a frenzy. Keyshia returned shortly after and kept the energy going, running through the rest of the debut album and fan favorites from her catalog. I had to call my mom and sister during “You Changed” and “Let It Go”—because that second album went triple-quadrupule platinum in my household. She closed the show with an encore of her timeless hit “Love,” and let me tell you, the whole building sang every word like it was 2005. A moment!

Now, the drama came after the show when Keyshia hopped on social media and revealed she had no idea Trey Songz was going to perform. “Whoever brought Trey out without letting me know is weird,” she posted. “If it happens again, you will be fired ASAP. Don’t bring nobody back out on my stage without me being able to give them a proper intro. I appreciate everyone who comes to show love.” Not sure what went down behind the scenes, but sis was not happy. Still, an amazing night that made me fall in love with Keyshia Cole all over again.

7 Things You Shouldn’t Do At The Airport

Keyshia Cole’s debut album The Way It Is dropped in 2005 and instantly became a classic. From the raw lyrics to the undeniable emotion in her voice, you could feel every word she sang. It was one of those albums that got played front to back—no skips. Whether you were going through heartbreak or just needed to scream in the car, Keyshia had you covered. Songs like “Love,” “I Changed My Mind,” and “I Should’ve Cheated” were the soundtrack to so many people’s lives. That album wasn’t just music—it was a whole era. She gave us vulnerability, strength, and vocals that hit you right in the chest. Two decades later and it still holds up like it just dropped yesterday.
