Officials at the State Fair of Texas are under pressure from state officials to lift a gun restriction. Last Monday, the fairgrounds’ administration made the announcement that firearms will not be permitted within the fair grounds this year.

Three individuals suffered injuries last year when a shooter opened fire in the food section of the fair. He lacked the proper authorization to legally possess the firearm, but the Texas State Fair has yet to disclose how he passed security with it. Licensed gun owners used to be able to carry concealed guns at the fair. In light of the new policy, that has changed.

Upon entering the fairgrounds, only current or former peace officers will be granted permission to carry firearms. Officials from the Dallas Police Department will check identification at the doors.

A lot of people agree with the change, but about 70 state lawmakers signed a letter saying the new rule will make the fair more dangerous. In answer, the fair said in a statement that it had adopted a policy similar to those used by numerous large community events across the country.

It is also urged that fairgoers report anything odd they see. On September 27, the Texas State Fair will begin. In late October, the trial of the gunman from last year will begin.
