Along with new music, Lanez’s legal case has seen a significant development. His driver and bodyguard, Jauquan Smith, who was the fourth person with Tory and Megan in the car the night of the incident, did not testify during the trial. Tory was sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, Smith has now made an official statement admitting that he did not see who shot Megan Thee Stallion. Smith’s testimony was submitted in an attempt to appeal Lanez’s prison sentence.

Smith’s statement clarified that he saw Kelsey Harris holding the gun at one point and recalled seeing Lanez attempt to disarm her. “I pulled over to stop them,” Smith continued. “Mr.Peterson and Miss Harris both got out of the vehicle and continued to fight both verbally and physically. Mr. Peterson and Miss Harris began struggling as Mr. Peterson tried to disarm Miss Harris,” Smith wrote in his testimony. He claims he was always down to testify on Lanez behave but was stopped

“I wanted to present this evidence during Mr. Peterson’s trial but was prevented from doing so,” he explained. “I believe I should have been allowed to present this evidence at trial.”- Smith

This entire incident took place on July 12, 2020, after a night of fun at Kylie Jenner’s house. While Megan is trying to put this behind her, Tory is still fighting to clear his name. The California Attorney General’s Office acknowledged that they knew about Smith’s testimony, but felt it wouldn’t have helped. “Recognizing that an independent eyewitness had placed the gun in the hands of Harris prior to the shooting,” explained Deputy Attorney General Michael C. Keller. “Defense counsel explained that it would not ‘do anything’ to have appellant’s friend say the same thing.” It remains to be seen if Smith’s testimony will help or hinder  Lanez’s case.
