On Friday, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office made the official announcement in a press release that they have concluded their internal investigation regarding the deputy that assisted in the death of 24-year old Johnny Hernandez.
As a result of the investigation, the deputy in question, Chauna Thompson was terminated.
“I have strong confidence in the leadership of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the rank-and-file deputies who put their lives on the line every day to protect our community,” HCS Ed Gonzalez said in a statement on Friday. “However, we will learn from the tragic death of John Hernandez.”

The department didn’t stop there because along with the termination of Chauna Thompson, four additional sheriffs were handed disciplinary actions for their involvement that May 28 night.
“It was great news to us. We feel like it should have happened since day one, but it’s a step in the right direction and we’re pleased with the outcome,” Melissa Hernandez, cousin to the victim, told our local ABC station.
Chauna’s attorney told the local ABC station that she was fired for “inaction” and he also said, “They called her in, wouldn’t tell her what the meeting was about, and told her she was fired.”
Chauna had been on unpaid administrative leave since June 6 for her involvement and on June 8 a grand jury brought indictment charges against her and her husband Terry Thompson for the choking death of the young husband and father.
According to the official initial incident report, on May 28 Terry Thompson pulled into the Denny’s parking lot with this children when they witnessed the victim urinating outside.
The report states that the 41-year old Terry “verbally confronted” John Hernandez and approached him when a physical altercation took place.
After the altercation began, the wife and off duty deputy Chauna arrived in a separate vehicle from her husband and she called in for assistance from the sheriffs and EMS.
John was restrained by Terry and later assisted by Chauna.
The husband and wife allegedly stopped restraining once they realized John had quit resisting and was not breathing.
