Break Free Hip Hop School launches a 24/7 cypher in the heart of the city. The school, founded by internationally renowned artists, invites Houston to join the dance circle, and the campaign behind it. As the school stands poised on the brink of rapid expansion, adding many more students and instructors every year, the team is making a bold move forward with Create Your Escape 2016 an initiative to provide 2,016 new students with full scholarships to the school’s programming over the next two years. “If dance, music, or art has ever changed your life, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be here,” says Moy Rivas, Director and Founder of Break Free.
Break Free Hip Hop School was founded in 2011 to provide the surrounding community with instruction and mentorship through positive Hip Hop culture. The school offers classes in Breakin’, DJing, Art, and Poetry, and has established a distinguished curriculum over the years that supplements the instruction of technique with the study of HipHop history. “We have directly mentored and educated over 1,000 local youth, but our vision is much greater than that,” says the center’s Assistant Director, Jeremy Peña. “The figure we’re striving to raise will provide many students with the opportunity to attend Break Free HipHop School free of charge some who may never have an opportunity to creatively express themselves without scholarship opportunities.” The total will also support the expansion of Break Free’s programming to accommodate the growth of the student base.
Hip Hop has influenced men, women, young adults, and children in every corner of the world. In it’s current state, HipHop faces issues in the form of misconceptions and misrepresentation. The values of peace, love, unity, and having fun that first bred the culture have taken a backseat to money, power, and fame. HipHop is innately educational. It can be used not only to instruct children on art forms, but significant life skills as well, leading them to become improved artists, individuals, and community members. HipHop education is necessary because it cultivates a culture that can change the world for the better, and it is a culture that can flourish fully through proper representation and mentorships, just as through the work of Break Free HipHop School.
Beginning Wednesday, March 23, at 5:00 am, the Break Free team takes the city to start a ‘round the clock dance cypher, to be held at an undisclosed location. The cypher will continue until the target amount is reached, with no breaks, rain or shine. To keep up with the team’s exact location, as well as their progress, follow Break Free on social media, including Facebook (/BreakFreeHouston), Twitter (@BreakFreeCC), and Instagram (@BreakFreeCC), and on their website www.BreakFreeHouston.com.Join the campaign by sharing, donating, or dancing alongside the Break Free HipHop School team onsite.
