Due to our social media driven world, those in the entertainment industry, especially musicians have begun to utilize social media to market their brands and themselves directly to fans and potential consumers.  Now Instagram is gearing up to take their platform into the music side.

Instagram announced Wednesday (Apr. 29) the official launch of a new account modestly named @music which will be solely dedicated to discovering new music from around the globe, the artists behind the music, and the community surrounding it.

“The music community is –– and always has been –– an important part of Instagram. For the past four years, we have become the home for artists big and small –– a place where people across the musical spectrum come to share stories, reveal their creativity and connect directly with fans.”

The editor for the account, Alex Suskind, spoke with BuzzFeed about the direction for @music. “We’re looking to break artists…One of the things we’re focusing on is emerging and unsigned talent who are using the platform to share music and their stories in a unique way.” Questlove, of the Legendary Roots, who will be a contributor for @music, in the second post gave tips on being a DJ.

Each week the account will highlight an artist, music photographers, album illustrators, instruments makers, and even fans. A new monthly music-themed hashtag project will be featured as well to encourage community participation. This month’s hashtag is #MHPlive for creative images of a live musical performance.
