The biopic has been marred by controversy from the beginning.  Zendaya Coleman was originally cast in the role of Aaliyah, but dropped out after the backlash.   Many were of the opinion that Aaliyah’s life is worthy of a BIG SCREEN debut not the small screen.

The network has revealed the first trailer for the Aaliyah biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B set to the sounds of Iggy Azalea. The Aussie rapper’s song “Goddess” plays between scenes from the made-for-TV movie, executive produced by Wendy Williams.

The 30-second spot gives us a first glimpse of Alexandra Shipp in the role of the late singer.

If you’re wondering why Aaliyah’s music wasn’t used in the trailer, that’s because Lifetime wasn’t allowed to license her catalog.
