(HOUSTON) — Houston Independent School District kicked off its free summer food service program Wednesday.

Several school districts and charities are teaming up to provide children with free meals during the summer.

Nationally, thousands of children don’t take advantage of the program.

The USDA reports that more than 2.5 million kids received free or reduced-price meals across the nation in 2013; less than nine percent ate at schools during the summer.
