(HOUSTON) — The future of Jones High School has been embroiled in controversy, and now the school is at the center of a lawsuit.

Representing the Houston NAACP, Carol Mims Galloway and James Douglas are named in the suit against the Houston Independent School District. Galloway is a former HISD board member, and Douglas is a Texas Southern University law professor.

The Latest News Headlines, Traffic and Weather:

The lawsuit claims the HISD school board violated the state’s open meetings act at a March board meeting when it switched the discussion from consolidating Jones High School to re-purposing the school.

“There were over 60 people at that meeting who were prepared to discuss the closure issue; no one came to that meeting prepared to discuss re-purposing,” Douglas said. “They had an obligation to post at least 72 hours, which is not what they did. They took immediate action and failed to post as the law requires.”

Douglas said they’re asking the court to allow citizens to have some input by reversing the district’s decision to turn Jones into Futures Academy, but that’s just a start.

“The NAACP would like for HISD to improve the programming in all the inner-city schools,” he said.

HISD released a statement, defending its “practice to carefully post and take action in compliance with the open meetings act.”
