(HOUSTON) — The Houston ISD school board unanimously passed a resolution to include high school-level Mexican-American history and culture classes as electives.

Superintendent Terry Grier says the classes will expose students to the significant impact Mexican-Americans have had on Texas’ culture.

HISD is petitioning the Texas Education Agency to adopt such courses as part of the state curriculum.

Sixty-two percent of the students in the district are Hispanic.
