(HOUSTON) — A loaded handgun was found in a student’s backpack Thursday at Cullen Middle School in southeast Houston.

A Houston Independent School District spokesperson said they received a tip about the gun.

An HISD police officer at the campus detained the student and confiscated the weapon.

“Please know that we take these situations very seriously and safety of our students and staff at Cullen Middle School is always our absolute top priority,” an HISD statement read.

The student was arrested and charged with possession of a prohibited weapon in a school zone. The student will also be punished by the district.

Parents are being notified of the incident and are asked to remind their children about the dangers of guns.
