The NBA’s first openly gay player, Jason Collins, made his season debut for the Brooklyn Nets on this past Sunday.
Since then, the fans have helped make Collins #1. On Tuesday, a league spokesman confirmed that the Collins’ jersey was the bestselling jersey in terms of both physical and online sales.
Collins wore No. 98 in the 2012-13 season for both the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards, in tribute to Matthew Shepard, the gay teenager who was murdered in 1998.
Not every 35-year-old 10-day contract signee gets their own jersey for sale in the league’s official store.
