Letters went out to 9,000 registered voters in Harris County. The voter registrar was trying to figure out how many had actually passed away. This all came about at the request of the Secretary Of State.

The registrar, Don Sumners, got answers back from some letter recipients who confirmed they are indeed alive. That left Sumner’s questioning the method that came up with the list. He says he will only remove names from people whose families indicated they did pass away.

According to reports, for the first time, the state used information from the Social Security Administration instead of the Bureau of Vital Statistics as in past years. A spokesperson for the secretary indicated sumners is supposed to remove the names per directives from the Texas Legislature.
