Tonight American Idol will crown a new winner. I gotta tell you upfront I’m a fan of the young vocal powerhouse Jessica Sanchez, however I think Phillip Phillips was at his blusey rockin’ best last night.
They both performed three songs. Round 1 was Idol creator Simon Fuller’s choice. Round 2 was the contestants’ choice, reprising a song they had previously sung on the show. Round 3 was their official “winner’s song,” the first single they’ll release following the competition.
For round 1 Jessica put her special touch on Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.” Phillip was given Ben E. King’s classic “Stand by Me.” I almost feel asleep. No doubt in my mind Jessica won this round.
In round 2 Jessica chose to go with a soulful rendition of Celine Dion’s “The Prayer”. Phillip went with Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out”. Neither singer truly stood out in my opinion so I decided to call this round a tie.
“Change Nothing” is the name of the single Jessica performed. It didn’t move me. It was more on the pop side. Her vocal presence wasn’t enough to save this forgettable song. I see her as more of a Jr. Beyonce and I figured she would come with something with a bit more “swag.”
Phillps “winner” song is called “Home”. And I can’t front. It’s good. It’s catchy. He even had a marching drum line. This round wasn’t even close. It was a straight knock out.
