Everyone remembers the choreography from Beyoncé’s iconic song Single Ladies from her album Sasha Fierce, not to mention the hip breath-taking choreography. Last week N.E.R.D. surprised fans with their debut single Lemon featuring no other than Bad Gyal RiRi aka Rihanna spitting more than impressive bars paired with of course a creative music video. The big question is who is behind these catchy, edgy music videos that are pushing the envelope using choreography? Meet JaQuel Knight. The North Carolina native has worked with some of the music industry’s biggest name such as Britney Spears, Big Sean, Cher, and Tinashe to name a few. And now Mr. Knight is doing maybe embarking on one of his biggest projects of his career thus far; Beyoncé’s Coachella set for 2018.

JaQuel speaks to Fader.com to discuss his inspiration for Lemon, what made Single Ladies so iconic, his creative process, and what dance means to him. In making Lemon, he wanted to display how liberating and unifying dance can really be. Knight researched iconic music videos through different eras in music such as in the 70’s and importance of such eras and music styles such as Soul Train. Furthermore, Knight argues that the purpose of Lemon was to display that dance is freeing, and liberating, as well as how important dance really is, and how it can heal the world.
