Newly released surveillance footage disproves a Georgia school’s initial claim that a 13-year-old student was able to walk after his teacher slammed him to the ground several times, according to WSB-TV. As a result of the violent action, the student’s right leg was amputated, the outlet reports.
The video, first obtained by All On Georgia, shows Bryant Mosley, the accused teacher, carrying Montravious Thomas through the hallway of Edgewood Student Services Center, then loading him onto a school bus. At one point, Mosley stops to put Thomas down, but picks him back up once the teen struggles to stand on the weight of his leg.
Montravious’ parents want answers as their son remains interned at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
“I was very angry about that when I seen the video of them walking him out,” Montravious’ mother Lawanda told WSB-TV.
The student’s injury stems from a September 12 altercation when Mosley allegedly used excessive force to restrain Montravious because he was disruptive in class. According to CNN, Mosley is no longer employed at Edgewood Student Service Center.
The Muscogee County School District released a statement claiming Montravious was “up and walking,” directly after the incident, WSB-TV reports. According to school officials, Mosley used “state-approved” guidelines to restrain Montravious.
But Montravious says otherwise. The teen claims he was walking out of the classroom to call his mother when the teacher aggressively attacked him, slamming him to the floor three times as he cried out in pain.
According to his parents, an ambulance was never called to survey the teen’s injury.
As a result, Montravious suffered a compartment fracture–forcing doctors to amputate his leg. The Thomas family intends to sue. The school plans to continue with their ongoing investigation, WSB-TV writes.
