Serena Williams defeated opponent Vania King 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday night, locking in her advancement into the U.S. Open’s third round. The win was Williams’ 306th Grand Slam singles victory, which ties with Martina Navratilova for the most women’s Grand Slam wins in history. Williams is just one shy from Roger Federer, who’s won 307 Grand Slam matches. The tennis player’s celebrity friends Beyoncé and Jay Z were also in attendance, cheering her on from the stands in Arthur Ashe stadium. Read more.


Simone Biles Pitches The Fab 5 As SNL Hosts

SNL, NBC’s long running comedic show, asked Twitter who should host this upcoming season with the hashtag #SNLhosts. Simone Biles tweeted back saying, #FinalFive PLEASE! We have been dying to do it… Biles, along with teammates Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian, and Gabby Douglas have used the time since the Olympics to enjoy the fruits of their labor. We’ll have to stay tuned to see if the ladies are picked as the “chosen five,” when SNL returns on October 2. Read more.


Nelson Mandela’s First Known TV Interview Uncovered

On Thursday, the Nelson Mandela Foundation unveiled his first known TV interview via Facebook. The interview shows Mandela solidifying the stance of the National African Congress during a break in a 1956 trial against him and 27 other people accused of treason. All charges were dropped in 1962, at which point Mandela went off the map. He was later arrested in 1962, serving 27 years in prison, before becoming South Africa’s first Black president in 1994. Dallas Police Chief Announces Unexpected Retirement

David Brown, the police chief who served the city of Dallas for 33 years, announced his retirement on Wednesday afternoon. Brown said the decision was difficult, but thanked his family, police force, and the city of Dallas for their support. He announced a second presser will be held on September 8 to further discuss the details of his retirement. The head of Dallas police was thrust into the spotlight after a gunman opened fire on July 7 at a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest. Brown was met with praise and criticism over his department’s reaction to events due to high tension surrounding recent police involved shootings of Black men. His retirement will go into effect October 22. White Woman Cries “Rape” At Black Man Standing In His Mother’s Backyard

In an incredible 8-minute-long video, an unknown Black man dismantles the racist perceptions of his White female neighbor. As he walks towards the woman to inquire why she is watching him and his friends through binoculars, the woman lets out a screeching cry, “Attack! Attack, I’m being raped! I’m being raped! Help me somebody!” she says. The man, who can’t believe what just happened, spends the next 8 minutes explaining to the woman how racist her allegations are, using the framework that White women in the past used the same accusations to get Black men killed and arrested. His mother, who lives above the woman, comes out to defend her son. The woman defends her actions the whole time and even asks if the man is a Muslim just because he has a turban on his head. Read more.
