Morris Day Remembers The Last Time He Spoke To Prince

The lead singer of the group the Time, Morris Day, tells us the last time that he heard from his old friend Prince.

Morris says that he received a call back In January from Prince saying that he wanted  his childhood friend to head to Minneapolis with his band to play in a private show with him.

In the movie Purple Rain, they were music rivals, but in real life, the two were friends and they worked together on projects and making music and songs.

Of course it had been some time since he had heard from Prince so when he received a phone call, Morris said, “It was the first time in a while that we’d had a chance to sit down and chat. It had been a few years since I’d seen him, I questioned why he was calling me up at the time. In hindsight, it’s almost like he felt something or knew something was up.”

When you consider the fact that within three months later, Prince had passed away, Morris would not have had those last moments with an old friend if he hadn’t gone to play in January.

Morris’ history with Prince starts back in the 70’s when they were in the band Grand Central together. When Prince when solo, he took Morris with him too. Morris was a co-writer of some of Prince’s songs like “Party up” which is on his 1980 “Dirty Mind” and Prince set-up the band The Time too.

Morris was careful when he said, “I’ve heard that a few times.He comes across as this serious, dark guy [in the movie]. But the Prince I knew was a quite the comedian. We talked sh** and laughed all the time.”

The private show that Morris made was something of their “last dance.”

“I heard he was having a good time when we were playing,” Morris says now. “There will always be a void. But life goes on. If it were me, I would want people to get on with it. I’m pretty sure he would want the same.”
