Mayor Sylvester Turner has directed City staff to begin making plans for a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the victims of today’s Orlando shooting rampage.  The vigil will be held Wednesday evening at sundown.
“Like the rest of the country, Houston is grieving today,” said Mayor Turner.  “It is past time for us as a country to come together against hatred toward any person or persons based on group affiliation – enough is enough.  We stand with Orlando, with the families of those killed or injured, with the LGBT community and against violence anywhere.”

The mayor’s comments came just before he was to speak at en event marking the 41st anniversary for the Houston LGBT Political Caucus.  The mayor is also speaking tonight at an annual Ramadan event.  Houston City Hall be lit with LGBT pride colors this evening.
Today’s massacre comes two weeks before Houston’s Pride celebration.  Mayor Turner has already been in communication with Acting Houston Police Chief Martha Montalvo about HPD’s plans for addressing safety concerns.
