The people who brought you FreePress Summer Fest decided to bring the magic back to Houston with Day For Night, at the Silver Street Studios located in the Heights. For two days, the music and arts festival featured everything ranging from truly unforgettable performances, to the delectable offerings from food trucks, and the just plain weird.

Things kicked off Saturday with a slew of indie artists who could only be described as eclectic. Prime examples are video art group Psychic TV and sister-duo CocoRosie. However, the highlight of night must go to neo-electric soul artist Janelle Monáe. She came with an unstoppable energy and enticing dance moves for her entire set.

Sunday night the heavy-hitters came out in full force. Electro-house and Trap super dj, Dillon Francis brought the party to the Green stage, which was situated in a warehouse. With every drop of the beat, the crowd came alive as if on cue. Francis left some passed out in the aftermath of his epicness.

On the red stage, Flying Lotus opened for festival headliner, Kendrick Lamar. Once Kdot stepped onto the stage, the crowd lost it. Without missing a beat, the Compton rapper went straight into his set with “For Free?” and “Wesley’s Theory” from his last project To Pimp A Butterfly. Kendrick went through other crowd favorites “Backseat Freestyle”, “Swimming Pools”, “B*tch Don’t Kill My Vibe”, and “m.a.a.d. city”.

After running through “m.a.a.d. city”, Kendrick decided to test fan dedication by inviting a lucky few on stage with him to rap the lyrics from the song. First up was Houston-native Corporate Dough, clad in a hoodie and swag all his own.

Following Dough, Kendrick wanted to see who could represent for the ladies of Houston. To the crowd’s and Kendrick’s disappointment, it took three attempts before a lady was able to deliver the rhymes.

Kendrick ended the show with “Alright” and a killer rendition of his throwback “ADHD”.
