On the heels of the Charleston AME Church shooting many found it hard to go on with their day, but despite carrying around heavy hearts many artists and industry insiders headed out to the premiere of the hip-hop fashion film Fresh Dressed in New York City.

While working the red carpet, Mikey Fresh of VIBE Magazine caught up with legendary rapper Nas and got his opinion on racism in America, the Emanuel AME Church shooting, and the healing process.

“We have to live our life in this zoo. How do heal the people that are mentally ill today? How do make them more respectful of each other no matter what race they are? Racism is rotting America. It’s been rotting America since its inception. So this is a very serious time that we’re moving into in 2015……Prayers to the families and family [members] that had to witness such a horrific [thing.] My prayers are with yall.”

Nas wasn’t the only hip-hop legend who weighed in on America’s toxic society. Mogul Russell Simmons stopped by Hot 97’s “Ebro In The Morning” to promote his new Celsius energy drink, but the conversation quickly turned into candid moment about race, New York City politics, and police brutality.
