Likable TV host and health doctor Mehmet Oz has defended his position as a member of Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons Department of Surgery. This past week, ten U.S. doctors questioned and petitioned against Oz’s credentials as Vice Chair for the Ivy League due to past allegations of (his) loosely-based facts on nutrition and exercise and and natural-based remedies.

From the group of physicians and doctors, an collaborative email was sent to Dr. Lee Goldman, the current Dean of Columbia’s Health Sciences and Medicines. Goldman was urged to remove Oz because of his “quack treatments.” Below is an excerpt of their harsh review:

“[Dr. Oz obtains a] disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine, as well as baseless and relentless opposition to the genetic engineering of food crops [has] “manifested an egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain.”

“Members of the public are being misled and endangered, which makes Dr. Oz’s presence on the faculty of a prestigious medical institution unacceptable.”

In recent years, Oz’s tactics and lessons have been challenged. CNN noted that in 2014, the doctor was sent to Capitol Hill for a hearing about a weight loss product he had advertised on his popular daytime show but was not as safe as he had promised.

Oz has responded to the controversy. In a short letter, he defended his truth:

“I bring the public information that will help them on their path to be their best selves. We provide multiple points of view, including mine which is offered without conflict of interest. That doesn’t sit well with certain agendas which distort the facts. For example, I do not claim that GMO (genetically modified organism) foods are dangerous, but believe that they should be labeled like they are in most countries around the world. I will address this on the show next week.”

Through American TV sets, Dr. Oz has dispelled and shared the best and worst tips on health, exercise and medicine. His influence is so high that he’s become one of the most known voices on living a cleaner lifestyle. He also has the benefit of the Oprah Winfrey stamp of approval, since being initially introduced to us by the talk show magnate.
