Dr. Martin Salia, 44, died of Ebola on Monday according to a statement released by Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Salia contracted the disease while working in Sierra Leon and after being treated in a biocontainment unit at a Nebraska hospital the surgeon lost the battle against Ebola.

“Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite out best efforts, we weren’t able to save him,” said Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the biocontainment unit according to People Magazine.

As a Sierra Leon native who lived in Maryland, he took the necessary precautions and was tested for the disease. He tested negative on Nov. 6, but four days later on Nov. 10 he tested positive with Ebola.

“Salia was suffering from advanced symptoms of Ebola, including kidney and respiratory failures,” health officials said according to CNN.

Ebola has claimed more than 5,000 deaths in West Africa, mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

This marks the second death at the hands of Ebola in the U.S.
