City of Houston Office of Emergency Management (OEM) wants you to learn the four P’s to keep your family safe this winter season.

Those cold weather safety tips are: protect the people, pets, pipes, and plants.

To keep people safe, the City of Houston to check on the elderly and be very cautious when participating in outside activities.

Also, when it comes to your furry loved ones take extra care of them during the harsh weather. Over exposure to the extreme cold climates can irritate their skin and lead to hypothermia or frostbite.

“While pipes generally do not freeze until the temperature drops into the 20s, pipes exposed to windy areas could experience cracking,” said OEM.

If you have plants that will be exposed to the cold this season, cover them with sheets to protect them from windbreaks “burn” them.
