(HOUSTON) — A local high school basketball team was awarded a state championship following a UIL investigation.

The Yates Lions are state champions. In fact, they are now the two-time defending state champions. But it’s not exactly the way they drew it up.

The Latest News Headlines, Traffic and Weather:

The Lions were awarded the titles after an investigation revealed that Dallas Madison, the team to which Yates lost in the state title game each of the last two seasons, was using an ineligible player.

Madison was forced to forfeit its titles.

The forfeiture is the least of the concern for Dallas Madison. The player who was ruled ineligible, Jonathon Turner, has been arrested and charged with the murder of his friend and fellow basketball player, Troy Causey.

It was during the investigation that Dallas ISD learned Turner lived outside of the Madison school zone.

He was named to the all-tournament team and was a key player in the win over Yates.

As a result, Yates now has four titles in the last six years.
