(HOUSTON) — Houston’s mayor confirmed Wednesday that the city has not been asked to house any of the undocumented immigrant children coming into the country illegally.

But Mayor Annise Parker said she is part of a working group that stands ready to help with the border crisis if necessary.

“If we can assist, we will,” Parker said. “But I believe the federal government has made a prudent decision in that the goal is not to throw cots down in gymnasiums and set up temporary shelters, which is what is happening in these border cities, but to move these kids to facilities that are already set up to house human beings.”

Parker said she has already considered available city structures to serve as housing, but there is nothing appropriate.
