A Hurricane Katrina or Sandy by any other name would still be just as devastating, but those names give them an identity.
Storm names also allow us to track tropical storms and hurricanes with less confusion, especially when they follow one another quickly or when there are multiple storms coming out of the Atlantic at once.
The World Meteorological Organization has a committee that maintains storm names. A list is reused every six years, but the names of storms that are particularly devastating – like the aforementioned Katrina and Sandy – get retired and replaced.
