Health insurance companies report that a majority of people who signed up under the Affordable Care Act have gone on to pay their premiums.

A majority of Americans who signed up for health insurance under the ACA have paid their first premium.

Representatives for the nation’s largest insurance companies told Congress that payment rates are in the low- to mid-80s percent range.

Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee says the figures show the new federal health care law is helping many Americans.

“I think the statement is a very important statement,” she said. “It is that it was the right legislation to pass. It was the right time. It was needed.”

But Republicans say plenty of questions remain unanswered and they include whether health insurance rates will rise next year and, if so, by how much.
