(GALVESTON, TX) — The trial of a Galveston father accused of keeping his son in an 8-by-6-foot box began with the prosecution and defense giving opening arguments Tuesday morning.
In opening arguments, both sides agree that David Wieseckel‘s then-9-year-old son had problems.

“The prosecution described it as a case of hate,” Macon said. “They argue, in this instance, the father grew to hate his son. The child has been diagnosed with several disorders and was a difficult child.”

The boy ran away in 2012, and that’s when investigators found the box in Wieseckel’s home.
Wieseckel’s defense attorney claims he didn’t abuse the boy.
“The defense is contending that, essentially, the child is a liar,” Macon said. “Some of the admitted mental disorders led to him making up some of the alleged abuse.”
Wieseckel is charged with injury to a child and unlawful restraint of a child. His son is expected to testify later this week.
