We’ve been anticipating the premiere of VH1′s “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story” biopic ever since we found out Lil Mama was cast as the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. Seriously, we couldn’t think of a better person to play Left Eye or a better role for Mama to reestablish herself as a respectable artist. Mama certainly embodied the rambunctious personality, petite frame and fiery punch of Left Eye and brought it to the TLC TV film so much that T-Boz and Chilli were freaked out by how accurate her depiction of their fallen friend was.

Mama, real name Niatia Jessica Kirkland, drew inspiration from every facet of Left Eye’s life. “It was really fun to embody a lot of Left Eye’s character as far as her animation goes because she’s a really fun person. We have a lot in common when it comes to that and it was very challenging. Her not being here was sad because when you really look up to somebody, especially when you’re playing them, I mean, I would’ve missed her no matter what, but being on set playing her, you miss her more,” she told us.

Left Eye died in a fatal car crash in Honduras while on a spiritual retreat. “You want her to show up and say, “this is how you gonna do this part, you wanna be like…” You know what I’m sayin’? You want her to break certain things down, but I still had that energy just for the love of picking up the characteristics that I watched.”

So how exactly did the “Lip Gloss” rapper get into character? “Reading, watching video, talking to family, and talking to friends, both Chili and Tionne,” she said.

RIP Left Eye!
