The Latest Houston News, Traffic and Weather:

After the deadly stabbing at Spring High School, the Sheriff Adrian Garcia said there is information it could be gang related.  While that is being investigated, there is no question gangs are a problem in our area. Sister station NEWS 92 FM’s Mike Barajas reports.

The director of the Mayor’s Anti-Gang office Patricia Harrington says gangs are a problem in the Houston area.  She says if you suspect your child is being threatened by gang members, don’t let them suffer in silence.

“That can be a problem, and again that is why I go back to parental involvement,” Harrington said. “You know kids are not always easy, they are asserting themselves, sometimes they do keep secrets, sometimes they don’t want to speak up.”

She says the best way to protect your children is stay actively involved in their lives pointing out that many times young people wind up joining a gang, because they felt nobody was paying attention to them.

Harrington says it helps for parents to be active at their children’s school, that way you get to know the teachers and the staff.  She reminds parents and students alike if you see gang or criminal activity you can report it anonymously.

Harrington says there are more than 200 documented gangs in the Houston area with some 20,000 gang members.
