From NEWS 92 FM – The North Shore Mustangs returned to form last year, finishing with a 12-2 record and an appearance in the Region 3, Division 1, title game. It was their deepest run in five years, but they don’t consider the season a success. The Mustangs have higher standards. They expect to win a state championship each year. Coach David Aymond has created a culture of excellence. It’s hard to please the players on North Shore. They don’t expect to be good, they expect to be great.

Listen to Danny’s Complete Story Below!

A 28-7 loss to Lamar is all the fuel North Shore needs for the upcoming year. They believe they would have played in the state championship game if they had knocked off the Washington Football Team. This year’s team features 11 returning starters with playmakers at key positions. The Mustangs will use a two quarterback offense, but look for Lawrence McCardell to start. Kevian Deleon is one of the state’s most dangerous kick returners and is tough to contain as a receiver. Running back Tristan Houston averaged over 12 yards per carry as a sophomore. There’s no telling how dangerous he can be with a full work load.

The defense is among the state’s fastest and most athletic. Linebacker Zach Whitley is committed to Alabama. His instincts are unmatched and his leadership is invaluable. His close friend and fellow linebacker, Christian Jacobs, is overshadowed but equally effective.

District 21-5A provides a constant challenge so expect the Mustangs to be battle tested come playoff time. Coach Aymond made sure to challenge his squad with a non district schedule that includes Clear Springs, Manvel and Cinco Ranch.

10 years ago, North Shore won the state title. It would be fitting for them to capture their second championship in celebration of their first. Lamar stands in their way and won’t relinquish the regional crown without a fight. These two teams may very well be on a collision course.

The North Shore Mustangs are on the Road to State!
