Katy football is synonymous with winning. That proved true again last season when the Tigers knocked off Cedar Hill 35-24 to win their seventh state championship and capped a perfect 16-0 season. That season is over. Sister station NEWS 92 FM’s Danny Mata catches up with Katy High School’s finest on the Road to State.

The 2013 campaign begins with aspirations of a repeat. Kylie Huddleston returns as the Tiger’s Quarterback and we should see him make strides in his senior year.

The Tigers will throw the ball more this year, but they’re still a running team. Rodney Anderson is finally the starting running back and could become the next 2,000 yard rusher. The defense is powered by linebacker Jake Blomstrom and should continue to be one of the best in the state.

The 2012 Tigers are regarded by some as the best 5A team in Texas history. That’s a tough act to follow, but the Tigers are always looking to improve. They see last season’s title as the first of many and will stop at nothing to achieve it.

“Knowing you’re bringing that championship back to Katy; there’s just no other feeling,” Blomstrom says.

Nothing is ever easy in Texas. The Tigers will have 4 new starters on the offensive line and will have to replace some outstanding players in Adam Taylor (Nebraska), Matt Dimon (Oklahoma) and Kyle Fulks (Baylor).

They begin the journey on the Road to State as the defending champions. They have no intention of relinquishing that crown.
