I was so sad to hear the reports of Paris Jackson‘s attempted suicide. This really hit home for me because that’s how I lost one of my best friends in 1999.

I met Jody while we were stationed in Orlando. We had class together, and quickly became friends once I found out he was a Dallas Cowboy fan as well. Eventually, after he got married and had two beautiful baby girls he named me the God Father.

But after the Navy, Jody had problems with his marriage and employment that became so overwhelming to him that he choose to take his life.

If I only I knew the warning signs maybe I could have helped him. As I look back at it he was dropping hints for almost 6 months that he was planning to choose death over life. He would say things like “I’d be better off dead” or “Nobody will miss me.”

I still miss my friend. Sometimes I cry. Sometimes I’m angry at him for leaving his wife behind to raise two children by herself. But I have come to terms that it was ultimately his choice to take his life.

I wish Jody understood that suicide is a permanent answer to a temporary problem.
