President Barack Obama acknowledged Tuesday the attack on the Boston Marathon was terrorism, but was unable to place responsibility for the dual bombings. Speaking at the White House, Obama said the investigation into who orchestrated the attacks was still underway by federal authorities.

Regardless of what has happened, he said, the strength and resolve of America was evident yesterday.

“This was a heinous and cowardly act, and given what we now know, the FBI is investigating this as an act of terrorism…Americans will refuse to be terrorized,” he said. “If you want to know who we are, what America is and how we respond to evil, that’s it: Selfishly, compassionately, unafraid.”

The president was unable to identify who orchestrated the attacks.

“We do not know if this was the act of an organization, or an individual or individuals,” Obama said. “As we have more information, we will keep you and the American people posted.”

The president urged every American to remain vigilant as the suspect or suspects are still at large. Specific terror threats were not identified following yesterday’s attack, he said, but encouraged citizens to exercise caution.

“We all have a part to play to alerting authorities if you see something,” Obama said. “Speak up.”
