If you made “YOLO” money this past year, Drake believes that money belongs to him.
The phrase “YOLO” which means “you only live once” became a famous lyric in Drake’s song, “The Motto,” with Lil’ Wayne and Tyga. To “YOLO” pretty much is an excuse to do whatever you want now and worry about the consequences later (if you worry about them at all).
A couple days ago, Drake Instagram’d these pics and alluded to the fact that he wants money for these retailer’s profits. He said, “Walgreens….you gotta either chill or cut the cheque” and then “Macy’s…same goes for you.”
But according to the Huffington Post, the site “KnowYourMeme.com attributes the first reference of YOLO to Adam Mesh from ‘The Average Joe.’ Mesh reportedly used the acronym during the NBC reality show in 2003 and then developed a YOLO clothing line in 2004.”
Uh oh, Drake! Looks like you’ve got some ‘splaining to do!
Here’s the thing: if Drake wants to get paid, Drake needs to trademark it and make his own products. Donald Trump did it with “you’re fired” from his Apprentice days, and Paris Hilton trademarked “That’s hot.” Were any of these people the first to utter these phrases? Nope, but they trademarked it, which entitled them to a check. You can’t get paid off something that you don’t own Drake, sorry.
Do you think Drake deserves YOLO royalties?
