A 10-year-old special needs child is being held in the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center after he allegedly vandalized school property and attempted to assault a teacher.
The incident happened Wednesday at Emmott Elementary School. Emmott is part of the Cy-Fair ISD which has a zero tolerance to destructive behavior in it’s schools.
School officials called authorities and the boy was taken to the detention center. He will make a court appearance on Friday.
Civil rights activist Quanell X and the boy’s family met the media on the steps of the downtown detention center to express their anger over the district’s handling of the situation.
The boy is currently taking meds for ADHD and according to his family he was scheduled to see a psychologist.
Quanell X says the zero tolerance rules should be eliminated or reformed.
The boy’s mother, Deandre Citizen expressed shock over what she considered severe punishment. “It hurts deeply because I feel like they’re starting my child off badly at the age of ten. He just turned ten this year. He’s a child, he’s a kid, they make mistakes. Talk to him, don’t lock him up.”
Cy-Fair ISD sent News92FM pictures of the classroom that displays some of the damage.
Cy-Fair ISD assistant superintendent for communication, Kelly Durham emailed this response.
“Assault of a public servant (teacher) is against the law, and destruction of school property and disruption to the learning environment are violations of the Student Code of Conduct.”
