In what has been called the “first game of the rest of their lives”, the Penn State football team blew an 11-point halftime lead and lost 24-14 to Ohio in an emotional season opener in front of the home crowd. Penn State students just wanted to see football again after a sex abuse scandal rocked the university last fall leading to the firing of legendary coach Joe Paterno. As a result of the scandal, Penn State was hammered by the NCAA who stripped the school of scholarships and the ability to appear in Bowl games for four years among other penalties. This led to the defection of many of the top players and incoming recruits. However, for the players that stayed to play under new coach Bill O’Brien names were placed on the back of jerseys for the first time in the school’s history.
