HOUSTON – Seeing snow fall in the Bayou City is a rare event, but there’s a chance it could happen this week.

11 News Meteorologist Mario Gomez says an Arctic blast will blow into town Tuesday, bringing with it some rain and a serious drop in temperatures.

How serious? We’re talking a 30-degree plunge in a matter of hours. Gomez said we’ll start the day Tuesday in the 60s, but the mercury will sink to the mid- to upper-30s by the evening.

“It’s going to be a really drastic change,” Gomez said.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hard Freeze Watch for the Houston area beginning Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, when temps are expected to fall below 25 degrees.

But the chance for snow doesn’t creep into the forecast until late Thursday.

Gomez said that Arctic air will still be in the area when an upper-level storm moves in Thursday night into Friday morning – a formula that could produce snow.

“Right now, it’s about a 30-percent chance, but that number could go up easily through the week,” Gomez said.

Even if the snow does fall, though, Gomez said any significant accumulation is unlikely.

“It’s a day-by-day evaluation. There’s a possibility that we could see some measurable snow, but very likely not,” he said. “We only see a few days a year where we have any chances, but this is one of those.”

Gomez said the icy-cold weather should move out of the area completely over the weekend, and we’ll see highs in the mid-60s and lows in the 50s again by Sunday.
