With all the hype about 3D films Clash of the Titans and Alice in Wonderland, it may be easy to miss Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too?. But no, there is no need to worry. The non-3D film debuted with $30.1 million on its opening weekend.

The comedy is a sequel to the hit 2007 film, Why Did I Get Married? The sequel beat the original by almost $10 million and is also Perry’s biggest start for a film that doesn’t feature his Madea character.

The film portrays four couples who reunite for their annual vacation, socializing and analyzing their marriages. The week in the Bahamas is disrupted with the arrival of an ex-husband of a recently remarried wife.

Despite Perry’s films constantly performing well in the box office, his own studio, Lionsgate was nevertheless caught off guard at the revenue. Dan Spitz from Lionsgate says that he always underestimates Perry’s box office.

Perry’s next film is a version of the play, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. The film is set to debut in January.
