HOUSTON — Tuesday has been windy and chilly, and it’s just going to get colder — temperatures are expected to dip to freezing.

A wind advisory is in effect for Brazoria, Chambers, Galveston, Jackson and Matagorda counties until 3 p.m. There were sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 35 mph.

There’s a red-flag warning for most of Southeast Texas until 6 p.m.

“What that means is it’s really easy to start those grass fires and have them spread, with the combination of humidities that are going to be 15 to 25 percent and with the strong winds,” KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Anthony Yanez said.

Temperatures on Tuesday were expected to be in the 50s most of the day, but they will take a dip when it gets dark.

“Overnight, those temperatures fall like a rock,” Yanez said. “Once the winds calm, we’re really going to see some cold temperatures (Wednesday) morning. I’ve got us right at freezing here in Houston. I think, at most, one or two hours of these freezing temperatures.”

Areas north of Houston should expect to be below freezing for a few hours. Conroe is predicted to be at 30 degrees at 6 a.m. Wednesday. Areas closer to the coast will be a bit warmer. Pearland is expected to be at 36 degrees at 6 a.m. and Galveston is predicted to be at 46 degrees.

It will gradually warm up throughout the week, with highs in the 70s over the weekend. Another front is expected to come through on Sunday or Monday, dropping high temperatures into the 50s on Monday. A wind advisory is in effect for Brazoria, Chambers, Galveston, Jackson and Matagorda counties until 3 p.m. There were sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 35 mph.
