Well, H-Town a day of snow has finally touched down in our little section of The Lone Star State. In fact, weather experts are describing the frigid temperatures we’ll experience over the next few days as a historic winter storm, likening the heavy snow and unusually cold weather patterns to climate conditions that haven’t hit Houston in over 50 years.

Typically, we get snow in our parts about once every four years.. but that got us to thinking: What are the top five coldest days we’ve had in the city? Houston has been recording temperatures since 1921, so with that said, take a look below at days that went down in history for being the boldest and the coldest.

COLD AS ICE: JANUARY 18, 1930
This was the coldest day in Houston’s history, when the temperature dropped to 5°F.
SEVEN DEGREES AND SNOW: DECEMBER 23, 1989

On this day temps recorded at George Bush Intercontinental Airport dropped to 7°F. Houston also received 1.7 inches of snow on this day. According to reports, December 1989 turned out to be the coldest month in history for not only Houston, but also Galveston and College Station.
THE FIVE-DAY FREEZE OF 1983

Houston remained below freezing for almost five days in a row. The coldest Christmas on record in Houston was in 1983, when the temperature dropped to 11°F.

2021 THE BIG FREEZE

Just a few short years ago, Winter Storm Uri touched down and wreaked havoc on the area. From February 13-17, 2021, Uri brought snow, freezing temps and power outages with temps that fell to 13 degrees Fahrenheit—the city’s coldest recorded temperature since 1989.

THE HARD FREEZE: JANUARY 16, 2024

Houston broke several cold records during a hard freeze, as temperatures dipped to 18 degrees and icy road conditions contributed to more than 100 ice-related crashes.
