Houston-Area Closings for Schools, Colleges, Courts, Airports and METRO Transportation

The days of arctic temperatures have arrived, and in preparation for colder-than-usual weather and icy conditions, local officials are closing doors tomorrow – and some of the closings may spill over into the following day.

With potentially dangerous traveling conditions expected to hit Houston by Tuesday (January 21), several Houston-area school districts have made the decision to close as a precaution. This may include the possibility of freezing rain, snow and ice on the roads, making travel hazardous for most of the day.

Light snow and hazardous ice are expected to begin early in the morning, and it could stay slushy all day with high temps in the mid 30s along with a blanket of rain, sleet and probably some snow. – Fox 26

Here’s what to expect in terms of closures this week:

TRAVEL

George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport will be closed on Tuesday.

All METRO services will be suspended for the evening beginning at 9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. On Tuesday, Jan. 21, service plans could change depending on weather conditions.

COURTS

According to KHOU11, Harris County District Courts, including civil, criminal, family and juvenile, are resetting Tuesday dockets. Court proceedings will be rescheduled to a later date. Also, Harris County is canceling all in-person proceedings for January 21, due to dangerous road conditions. Those proceedings will be rescheduled. Some online hearings will go on as scheduled.

SCHOOLS

All schools will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
