As Hurricane Harvey threatens the Texas coast, The Salvation Army of Greater Houston is on standby to respond as needed.

Among the current efforts taking place due to Hurricane Harvey are:

  • –  The four (4) homeless shelters –Harbor Light for men, Sally’s House for women, Family Residence forfamilies, and Conroe Red Shield Lodge for individuals and families- are preparing for overflow and willnot turn anyone away due to the inclement weather.
  • –  The six (6) Corps Community Centers are stocking up their canteens (mobile kitchens) or vans withwater and snacks to assist affected communities.
  • –  Salvation Army officers and trained volunteers are on call to provide spiritual support and immediatedisaster relief manpower when the time arises.The Salvation Army of Greater Houston is in contact with the Harris County Office of Emergency Management, the City of Houston, the City of Pasadena, the City of Deer Park, and Fort Bend Office of Emergency Management, among others. Furthermore, communication with the Emergency Disaster Relief (EDS) offices of The Salvation Army Divisional and Territorial Headquarters are also ongoing, should additional support be needed.

    “The Salvation Army has more than 115 years of experience in disaster relief efforts since officers were first called to respond to the Galveston Hurricane of 1900,” said Major Kent Davis, Area Commander of The Salvation Army of Greater Houston. “It is because of this tradition of service and our mission to meet human need that The Salvation Army stands ready to help.”
