Single Ladies had been scrapped from the ‘Formation World Tour’ show lineup early on. But Ashley Everett, Beyonce’s dance captain, didn’t think deeply into it when it was added back into the routine on the St. Louis stop of the tour on September 10.

“When we started rehearsing it to add it back in, we were all like, ‘Why are we adding it back in now? The tour is almost over, but whatever,’ Ashley explained during a candid chat.

The 27-year-old dancer, who trained at the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, is never too far behind Beyonce, as her signature red curls make her a standout among the other dancers.

“We had only performed Single Ladies one other time on this tour and we brought up two fans to do the Single Ladies dance with us. And then it had just ended up getting chopped after our first performance. We never did it again,” she said.

Ashley was performing the number one hit alongside Beyonce when the music stopped.

“We naturally look over like, there are the stairs, that’s where the fans are going to come up. So, when I saw him, I thought, well obviously he’s not going to get out here and do the ‘Single Ladies’ dance. There wasn’t anyone else with with him. He was by himself. He was in that nice white suit jacket and from the second I laid eyes on him and saw the way he was dressed and how serious, he meant business. I was like ‘OK, this is about to go down.’”

His name is John Silver. The now-engaged couple have been dating for six years. They met in 2010 on a dance job. At the time, John was working closely as a principle dancer for Ne-Yo.

“He was like me to Beyonce to Ne-Yo,” she joked.

Despite both working on two video shoots for Ne-Yo and mutual friends who insisted they were perfect for each other, Ashley and John had never met.

“The third video, we were partners and were forced to be around each other and talk and finally get to know each other. We hit it off as friends first and I guess the rest is history.”

After the proposal, Ashley went back stage where she said everyone was yelling “Congratulations.” But, she had to get back into performer mode because she had a show to do.

Ashley says she felt most vulnerable at that moment because her professional and personal life collided.

“I was really trying to keep it together up there and not look like a weirdo because we were in front of an audience. I felt out of my element. When I’m on stage, I’m like another character. I’m not Ashley on my couch, I’m the performer Ashley. So to stop the show, and then my man, who I have a life with outside pf performing, is walking up. I just felt so vulnerable. That was one of the most special things about it. Bringing my life with him into this world that I have been living in also for a very long time.”

John also danced with Beyonce on several award shows, which gave him access to the megastar, who seemed more than happy to help him pull off the ultimate engagement.

“After the show we talked for a minute,” she revealed. “[Beyonce] was like ‘I’m so happy for you. I hope you guys are happy. Congratulations’ and we were like ‘Thank you so much for making all this possible.’ She seemed like she genuinely meant every word. Really sweet”

Ashley and John haven’t yet set a date for their wedding, but she’s more than open to help from a wedding planner.
